CHURCH HISTORY
On September 19, 1979, after much prayer the Greater Mountaintop Missionary Baptist Church was birthed as a ministry for Christ by the late Reverend Milton Toliver under the leadership of Reverend Calvin Moore of the Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church.
Sister Willie Mae Mitchell was one of the founding members of the ministry. She offered her home for many prayer meetings and worship services. The late Pastor Toliver instilled in his members “to always wait on the Lord”. After a season of prayer meetings and worship services, God allowed us to hold worship services at the Chicago Baptist Institute. Our ministry has continued in faith over the past 44 years. Pastor Toliver was faithful and dedicated to the service of Christ and the ministry until he passed the mantle to our current pastor. Pastor Mitchell has been a member of Greater Mountaintop Missionary Baptist Church since its organization. He was licensed as a minister of the word of God, on June 20, 1999, and ordained on April 22, 2001, by Pastor Toliver. He worked hand in hand with Pastor Toliver assisting him with many aspects of the ministry’s daily, weekly and special activities. Reverend Mitchell organized special services, fundraisers and events to help build the ministry. He believes in hands on ministry work and that the best leader is first a servant. In January 2009 we were blessed to install our current pastor, Reverend Kennedy Earl Mitchell.
It is Pastor Mitchell’s earnest desire and vision to encourage, empower and impress upon people the importance of living a life for Christ. By the command of God, Pastor Mitchell changed the name of the ministry to be more reflective of Christ’s mission of “go ye into all the world...”. In 2012 Greater Mountaintop M. B. Church became Greater Mountaintop International Christian Ministries. With this, it is his desire and with a vision given by God to move the local church body out of its comfort zone into international ministry work, and to spread the gospel of Christ abroad. God has blessed Greater Mountain Top to purchase our current location, 500-512 East 71st Street, Chicago, Illinois. We believe that God has placed us in the Park Manor Community to be a beacon of light for this community and the world.
In June of 2018, Greater Mountaintop International Ministries joined Christian Covenant Fellowship of Ministries under the leadership of Bishop Michael A. Blue of Florence, North Carolina.
